CONTEXT
The International Labour Organization's project on "Improving the governance of labour migration and the protection of migrant workers’ rights in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt (IRAM)" aims at promoting good governance of labour migration and protection of male and female migrant workers’ rights in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt with a view to enhancing the development benefits of labour migration.
To reach its goals, the project intends to:
Provide national stakeholders with capacities and practical tools to elaborate and implement coherent rights-based and gender-sensitive labour migration policies/strategies, through a highly participative process of consultation with social partners and relevant civil society organizations;
Support the strengthening of national laws and practices concerning labour migration and the protection of migrant workers in light of relevant international instruments;
Support an intra-regional North African dialogue on labour mobility and protection of migrant workers.
INTERNSHIP
The ILO / IRAM project is seeking a professional and enthusiastic intern to join the project team in the final phase of project implementation. This is a great professional development opportunity for Master's and PhD level students or young professionals seeking to pursue a career in international development, and especially in the field of labour migration and protection of migrant workers' rights.
The selected candidate will be involved in all aspects of the implementation of a subregional development cooperation project covering Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, and will be exposed to daily work in one of the first entities of the United Nations system: the International Labour Organization. The intern will be based in Tunis and will be a member of the ILO / IRAM project team; (s)he will also interact with ILO colleagues in Cairo and Rabat.
Ideally, the intern should be an enthusiastic young professional or graduate student who can be available for a six-month period starting as soon as possible (the internship must end before 30 November 2016). Fully fluent French speakers with a good command of English are encouraged to apply. A background and some experience in international development projects, migration and development, and/or human rights / migrant workers' rights would be valuable assets. Experience with graphics software, communication and social media, as well as public information would be an asset too, since one of the roles envisaged for the intern is to support the ILO / IRAM team in ensuring, good communication and public information on, as well as visibility of, the IRAM project.
Terms of Reference for the Internship
Under supervision of the Tunis-based Chief Technical Adviser and in close coordination with the National Project Coordinators, the intern will work on national and subregional activities in the final six months of the project implementation. His/her tasks will consist of the following:
Participating in steps and activities contributing to the achievement of the three project objectives;
Drafting sections of technical cooperation project-related documents as well as other written documents;
Preparing presentations for seminars, workshops and conferences;
Compiling relevant data, statistics and news (daily information) on labour migration, migrant workers’ rights and relevant issues in North Africa;
Assisting in the dissemination of project-related material, fact sheets and tools;
Assisting in the development of promotional material, possibly including fact sheets, videos, leaflets, website, etc.;
Attending meetings and drafting minutes / reports on them;
Assisting with other ad-hoc tasks in the office, such as providing comments, helping organize seminars and conferences, etc.;
Carrying out other duties as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications and requirements
Education: Postgraduate degree (either completed or studying towards it)in international development, social or political sciences, economics, law, international relations or other relevant fields; specialization in human rights and/or migration preferable.
Experience: Preferable but not strictly required: some professional/internship experience in development cooperation.
Languages: Native or near-native command of French. Full proficiency in English. Knowledge of Arabic is not strictly required but would be an asset.
